Come swing some tools, make friends, try new gear, learn something new, and maybe even change your life – it happens every year at the Arc’teryx Bozeman Ice Climbing Festival! Our full day On-Ice clinics run Thursday, December 12th, Friday the 13th (Women Only), Saturday the 14th and Sunday the 15th.

Climbing Clinics

Hyalite Clinic Price Includes: Demos of the best dang gear on the planet including boots, crampons, axes, harnesses, helmets and clothing (pick up the night before). 5+ hours of on-ice instruction by world class climbers. Included is: Free admission to Thursday and Friday evening speakers, free admission to the legendary Sunday Wrap Party Dinner and a Movie, raffle tickets for free gear, a bunch of additional swag, discounts, and the most fun you can have with your clothes on.

So why the limited numbers? Despite 200+ routes within two miles of the parking lot, we work hard to keep the guide:student ratio low and plenty of opportunity to catch another lap and hang with your peers and heroes.

Women’s Only Clinics – Friday, December 13, 2013

Clinics designed for women of all abilities by some of the top women athletes in the sport. Learn to climb like a girl, set up your own anchors, and blow away all the boys with your new found skills. The women’s clinics are catered specifically to the way women learn and climb with an emphasis on camaraderie and hard core ice climbing in a supportive environment that is only intimidating to the men who are envious of your new techniques.

Urban Base Camp Clinics & Technique Classes

For the first time ever at the Arc’teryx Bozeman Ice Festival®, additional clinics will be held in town at the Urban Base Camp, downtown Bozeman. There will be options for free gear rental from our sponsors. On-line registrations are now closed but walk-ins are allowed and encouraged. Please try to arrive at the Urban Base Camp up to an hour prior to the start time to ensure you have time to check in.

Intro to Ice Anchors and V-threads

Anchors and screw placement are the single most important skills in your quiver as an ice climber. This exciting new clinic is open to anyone interested in expanding your skill set and confidence to take your climbing to places you never thought possible. Early registration is recommended but drop-in spaces will be available.

  • Skill Level Required: This workshop is designed for anyone interested in learning more about ice screws, ice anchors, and V-threads.

In-Town Intro to Ice Climbing

These classes are designed to introduce people of age, ability or fitness to the exciting sport of ice climbing. Not quite willing to commit to full day clinic in Hyalite? These experiential-based classes will give the opportunity to swing some tools, walk in crampons, and test your mettle in a safe and encouraging environment without committing loads of time and money. On-line registrations are now closed but walk-ins are allowed and encouraged. Please try to arrive at the Urban Base Camp up to an hour prior to the start time to ensure you have time to check in.

Hyalite Canyon Clinics

Gear Demo check out takes place the night before your clinic at the Emerson Ballroom, 5:00 to 7:30 pm. The next day you will carpool and meet your guides in Hyalite at 8:00 am (about 45 minutes from downtown Bozeman). Clinics will go until 3:00 pm then you must return all demo gear in the parking lot. Come prepared with additional warm clothes.

Beginner to Intermediate Ice Climbing at G2

Never climbed before? New to winter sports? Everyone has to start somewhere and this is the place! In this fun and welcoming clinic, you will learn everything you need to know about the basics of ice climbing. You will learn all about the gear and safety, basic technique, and how to make the most of those sharp pointy things on your hands and feet. No experience needed.

Beginner to Intermediate Ice Climbing at G1

Are you an rock or gym climber but have never swung and axe? Or have you ice climbed before and ready to graduate to the next level? This fundamentals clinic is for you! Our world class athletes and guide will mentor you from the easy stuff as you work your way onto challenging vertical ice up to Grade 4+. This clinic will build a strong foundation in body position and swinging your tools like a pro.

  • Skill Level Required: This course is designed for novice climbers with no ice experience or anyone who simply needs a refresher.

Intermediate to Advanced Ice Climbing at G1

Feeling confident in the basics of ice climbing? Interested in moving over rock? Curious how the pros get so good at placing ice screws? Being a good ice climber has nothing to do with how many pull ups you can do but is all about efficient movement. In this clinic, learn how to manage your strength and endurance. The morning will be spent on steep ice up to Grade 4+ where you’ll learn how to get creative by adding new tricks to your ice climbing quiver that will help you get up pitch after pitch. The afternoon will be divided into specialty lessons featuring mixed climbing, building anchors and enough laps for a well-earned aprés-climb toddy.

During the afternoon at G1 there will be the opportunity for advanced specialty lessons on the diverse features found in the Genesis area. There will be introductions to mixed and rock climbing with ice tools, anchors, and other secrets of the pros. Anyone from the 101, 102 and 202 classes can participate (see descriptions).

  • “Mountaineer” i.e. Rock Climbing with Crampons

    Want to take your climbing to the snowed up and iced over mountains but not up for M 10, then this is the clinic for you. Most of the classic “mixed” climbs found everywhere from Granite Peak to Gasherbrum don’t require figure fours and one arm pull ups. In fact, more time is spent balancing on crampons with your hands doing more pushing than pulling. Learn and practice the skills you need to travel fast and efficiently in the mountains. These mini-clinics will be taught near Genesis I on several different rock features from low angle stuff (M3) to quite steep (M6).
  • “Anchor Therapy” i.e. Anchors Assessment & Protection Placement

    We all know peace of mind comes from feeling secure. These clinics will help you learn to trust ice screw and natural gear placement as well as anchor construction, all without having to talk about your mother. Learn the tricks used by the pros to stay quick, efficient and safe from Hyalite to Patagonia.

Intermediate Ice Climbing at the Amphitheater

This clinic offers the full suite of skills needed to become a better ice climber. Starting on easy Grade 3 flows, move onto short vertical pillars including a taste of mixed climbing.

Intermediate to Advanced Ice Climbing at Mummy

Take your climbing up a notch. Learn more advanced techniques for not only the steep stuff up to Grade 5 but also how to move more efficiently and confidently on moderate ice. Mastering the skills taught in this clinic will make your ice climbing quicker, safer and more fun as you move onto longer climbs or branch out to new venues, or perhaps follow your passion to the greater ranges.

  • Skill Level: Some ice climbing experience up to Grade 3.

Intermediate and Advanced Mixed Master

This clinic includes a bit of everything on Hyalite’s most diverse and scenic venue, The Unnamed Wall. Designed to challenge the intermediate to advanced climber determined to improve their skills on everything from traditional mixed climbs, to moving quickly on fatty flows, to thin and narrow ice, dry rock, and if you are up for it, a little bit of climbing upside down! Thursday and Friday (Women’s) Only.

  • Skill Level: Intermediate to advanced climbers, rock or ice.

Intermediate Ice and Mixed Climbing, presented by Grivel

Designed with big mountains in mind, learn more than just how to go up and down steep ice. On this day, you’ll spend time doing laps on more moderate ice learning how to move efficiently in the mountains where climbing well side to side is just as important as moving up the steep stuff. There will be the added challenge of mixed climbing on a variety of routes from icy cracks to steep faces covered in cobbles. Mastering the skills taught in this clinic will make your ice and mixed climbing quicker, safer and more fun as you move onto longer climbs or perhaps follow your passion to the greater ranges. Khumbu Climbing Center 2-Day Rescue Clinic


Looking for some additional skills to make you a more confident, competent, and independent climber? What do you do when something goes wrong? Learn from those who teach the Sherpas to climb, the instructors of the Khumbu Climbing Center. This 2-day seminar offers a variety of great rescue skills using what you carry on your harness. Day 1 will focus on escaping a belay, tandem rappels, counter-balance rappels, and self and partner rescue. Day 2 will introduce small group rescue techniqes such as basic raising and lowering systems that can be used in a variety of scenarios such as crevasse extrication.

    • Skill Level: Must have some ice climbing experience with a solid foundation in climbing knots, belay and anchor systems.
    • Instructors: The clinic features legendary climber and ranger Renny Jackson who literally wrote the guidebook to the Teton Range and has been at the forefront of North American mountain rescue for over three decades, Denali Park climbing and rescue ranger Chris Erickson, and KCC Director Steve Mock.
